When cleaning the water in your aquarium, IceCap Algae Turf Scrubbers employ algae as a natural water filter to get rid of extra nitrates, phosphates, and other contaminants. An algae scrubber enables you to develop algae in a controlled environment where it can be readily removed, preventing uncontrolled algae growth inside your display tank and, as a result, eliminating impurities from your tank. This all-natural method of water filtration can minimize or perhaps completely do away with the requirement for water changes. The best part is that freshwater, saltwater, and reef aquarium systems may all safely employ algae scrubbers.
It should be noted that this reactor is only intended for exterior usage and should be installed outside of your sump or other filtering system. Installation calls proper drain plumbing, which is not included, and a working knowledge of plumbing.
HOW IT WORKS
IceCap Algae Scrubbers are made to be installed outside of your sump, allowing the water that passes through them to return to your primary filtering system. The EVO water pump that comes with the scrubber supplies water to it. The water entering the device drips down onto a screen that is flanked by strong full-spectrum LED lights. Your aquarium water is “scrubbed” of extra nutrients when algae starts to form on the screen, resulting in reduced algae growth within your tank. Once the screen is coated in algae, you “harvest” it by removing a significant amount of it, clearing your system of the toxins that encouraged its growth.
HOW TO HARVEST ALGAE
To remove the top, first loosen the side quick-release joint. Remove the pipe and the algae screen, then pour water over them in the sink. To get rid of tough buildup, use a scraper like a credit card. To avoid slowing development when you put the algae back into your system, take care not to remove all of it from the screen. To help the subsequent batch develop more quickly, leave some algae behind to serve as a seed. You will typically be harvesting algae every one to three weeks.
WHEN TO RUN YOUR SCRUBBER
To assist maintain the pH of your aquarium water, many hobbyists like to operate their algae scrubbers on a reverse daylight cycle. This may be achieved by connecting the LED lights to a timer or aquarium controller and setting the timer or controller for a 12-hour daily photoperiod that runs counter to the schedule of daylight for your display tank illumination.

If the main drain ever becomes clogged with algae, IceCap Algae Turf Scrubbers come with an emergency drain fitting.
