Small Polyp Stony corals, or SPS as they are often referred to in the hobby, serve as the main building blocks of the reef. As they grow and build up their calcium carbonate skeletons they expand the reef, effectively building a larger ecosystem for other corals, invertebrates and fish to reside in. Although they are often seen as the most challenging type of coral in the hobby, encrusting SPS can be just as easy to keep as many LPS. The SPS category encompases many different species of corals that we’ve been collecting and farming for years to provide the hardiest, most colorful specimens possible. Corals need stable water conditions to thrive.

Proper water conditions are important for coral health. Stable water conditions are necessary for corals to achieve their full colors and growth potential, as well as reproduce and feed. If the water temperature fluctuates too much, or if there are large changes in salinity (or other factors), the corals won’t be able to thrive.

The first step in proper care is water changes. Water changes remove nitrates and phosphates, which are naturally occurring compounds that can be detrimental to the health of your aquarium and its inhabitants. Corals absorb these chemicals through their tissue, so by removing them you will keep them healthy as well as prevent algae growth on the glass (which is harder to remove once it has taken hold). To perform water changes use a bucket or container big enough for you to reach into without spilling any water into the tank; this will allow you better control over where you place things like rocks or corals back into place after cleaning them up with fresh saltwater from another container (or even just transferring it directly from one side of an aquarium).

Make sure that both sides of each piece are cleaned at once (if possible) so that one side does not have time exposure before being rinsed off again!

Stable water conditions: SPS corals need tough, clean, and well-maintained water conditions. Poor water quality can lead to the demise of your coral. This is usually due to inconsistent flow or temperature fluctuations. To maintain good water quality, we recommend monthly cleaning of the aquarium using pure freshwater or saltwater from a reputable source (not local tap, bottled, or distilled).

Light: SPS corals need moderate light exposure to grow; however most species will grow fine without this as long as there is enough light for photosynthesis (algae growth) and some supplemental feeding if needed!

Water flow: All open-ocean Acroporids require moderate flow at all times during their lives; however, some may tolerate lower flows depending on how old they are and where they have been collected from (check out our article about collection locations here).

Corals are beautiful and fascinating, and it’s easy to get caught up in their beauty. But remember that they’re still just animals, and like all animals, they need care and attention if we want them to thrive in our tanks. So be sure to give your SPS corals what they need!
